My brother-in-law drove one of these in yellow for many years. He’s the outdoorsy type, and he said that he enjoyed the functionality of what is arguably one of the ugliest vehicles ever foisted on humanity. So my question is, would you drive something that is hideous if it gave you the functionality you required?

I don’t care about the design of a car if it’s good and what I’m looking for. So yes... But required functionalities are limited as far as I’m concerned: being a blast to drive.

Depends on what functionality was required. Something that needs to be a bit rugged? Sure.

These are making a minor comeback, not on account of their being good though.

This is almost the epitome of the Jalop spirit (even if it’s not actually a BMDW).

As for the question I think functional ugly is just waiting on time. I.e. I can’t imagine the g wagon or fj55 were considered pretty in their time but we admire their honestly and ruggedness and even their design today even though they are objectively still ugly. The trick is it has to be good first and ugly second. If it’s just okay and ugly...I don’t know

Would I drive something hideous if it gave me the functionality I required? No because a plain functional design can look very good. The Aztec did have decent utility, but it compromised for it’s hideous design. A boxy SUV looks good and is more functional.

I’ve never really understood the hate for the Aztek. I don’t think it really looks that bad, and the front even looks kind of good.

I’d rather drive it than its sibling, the Buick Rendezvous

Yup. I was recently looking into how fast you could make a minivan for cheap, because “practicality.” I don’t have kids, or near future plans for them. On a sidenote, I made a crazy fast awd aztec in Forza 6. Beating Corvettes in an Aztec doesn’t get old.

I drive a FoST, which looks like someone ran a minivan through the a hot wash/dry cycle. People could easily mistake it for a rental car.

So yes, yes I would drive something that served my purposes even though it was ugly.

Up to a point, yes.

Depends on how ugly it is and if it’s the only/best option.

So for example, I’d have no problem with a minivan if I had 3+ kids, because I don’t mind minivans and it’s not like a large 3-row crossover isn’t also a mommy-mobile.

We got an 03 Odyssey when my twins were born (three kids total). It’s been fantastic. Which isn’t to imply that it’s ugly; I think the newer Oddys are hideous. It’s been the perfect people hauler, particularly on long trips.

I test drove a FoST last year, a 2014 IIRC. The salesman took us (my three boys and me) out on some back roads, and I flogged that thing hard. The salesman remarked that I was one of the few customers who really put it through its paces. It was a f’in blast. Inside? Ugly. No back seat leg room. But if it were just me, I would have put up with that for the performance. Unfortunately, we were replacing my wife’s car, and it was going to be her DD. So we ended up with a 2013 Civic EXL. It’s nice, but my god, is it gutless.

I know for a fact, it’s capable offroader. Especially in New Mexico deserts. Your brother in law had one of these, but traded it in for a Chrysler 300 if I recall. Even your brother in law couldn’t deal with that ugly mess for too long. Don’t get it, Hank!

Actually, he’s driving a Vanagon now. Not sure how long he’s been without the Aztek. I think he wrecked it when he fell asleep behind the wheel.

Oh yeah... he’s got that volvo thing now... He says he wrecked it... but he traded the aztec in for the 300. Feds took it away i think. I’m not exactly sure what happened to 300.
